Baby Showers

There are a lot of babies in my life right now! Until about a year ago, I had never even been to a baby shower - but I think I'm getting the hang of them, haha! I love making gifts, as you can tell from my earlier blog entries. I started crocheting not too long ago, and I wanted to make a hat. I searched and searched, but every pattern I found was too... something. Too fancy, too plain.. So I made my own!

I made a few with different colours for my Etsy store for anyone else looking for a unique shower gift!

Glass Tiles Are Fun!

I thought I'd post a picture of the kind of work I've been doing lately.  I've been mounting images on scrabble tiles and glass tiles and coating them with a hard resin.  I really love the effect and am so pleased with my work.  I had my first sale on etsy, and I'm so excited!

Well I've been branching out in my crafting...

After posting my knitwork on Etsy, I've been exploring other avenues and have made some accessories and jewellery.  I'm really enjoying working with Scrabble and glass tiles.  I have enjoyed how Etsy has given me a reason to get so crafty lately and I am having a blast!  Check out my new goodies!  I'm so proud.... Oooohhh Intarsia

Here is my first and only successful foray into intarsia knitting.  Intarsia = tangled mess that I can only cope with on the small scale of a wrist band.

Sage's Christmas Sweater

Here is a little blue sweater I made for Sage for Christmas.  It seems like a rather simple pattern, but the folded neck made me learn a new technique - stopping early in my rows, twisting the stitch and turning.  The technique I learned (thank you, Debbie Bliss) prevented any holes for showing, and looked great.

Maya's Hoodie and Dress

Here it is, my first foray into crochet!  I made this sweater, which was pretty adventurous for a first project, but that has been the way I learn - go in way over my head and try to fix my mistakes as I go along.  I discovered just how fast crochet is, and am wondering whether I may become a convert.  Knitters and crocheters seem to stay firmly on opposite sides of the fence, but I am intrigued by these new skills.  I get excited when there is so much more to learn, so expect more crochet to pop up for a while...  

Here Maya is, wearing wearing her hoodie in combination with the dress I knitted for her a while ago.  The dress is following the same pattern as the one I made for Sage last year, but I decided to try using a different colour for the trim.  I unintentionally made a set, because the trim on both is in the same purple yarn!

Kniting Videos Online

Hey, I thought I'd let any new knitters who check my page know about the resource that was most helpful to me when I started out.  Knitting Help has videos that show how to do many versions of the different stitches you need.  This was really helpful for me because I learned most of my techniques on my own.  Reading the descriptions of a stitch in a book is really nothing like watching someone do it in front of you.  This website bridged that gap for me and I hope it helps many others!!!

Newer Projects

It's been a while since I posted pictures, but that doesn't mean I've stopped knitting!  I managed to get some photos of other projects I've made, and am finishing a couple of other ones right now.  I'll be sure to get them up soon!!

Caelan's Newborn Sweater

This sweater was made in the same yarn as the trim of his big boy sweater. It wraps around, making it easy to put on a newborn, and can be worn frontwards or backwards. This pattern was very quick to make (partly because of his tiny size!) and introduced some neat new techniques.

Mum's Hat

Simple hat in a nice shiny blue wool - gloves to come soon! (Started them, made a mistake, got angry - to be continued!)

Sage's Baby Dress

The best thing about this dress is definitely the little shiny ribbon threaded through eyelets around the waist. It's a sweet pattern and was satisfying to make.

Caelan's Big Boy Sweater

I loved making this sweater and I think the finished product is awfully cute. What do babies need pockets for? What do they put in them???

Daryl's Hat And Gloves

I really winged this one and I was really happy with the way this set turned out. I'm happy that the pieces looked like I had pictured in my head. The hat is the most complicated one I've made, with a mix of half-cables and ribbing. I liked the way the ribbing joined up in the decreases at the top. The effect in the scarf turned out nicely. Staggering the stripes and the checkerboard pattern (which I really liked when I did it for the baby blanket for Maya) added a lot of interest.

Nicola's Devil Hat And Gloves

Continuing the devil theme, here is a horned winter hat and matching fingerless gloves. I love this soft shiny wool - warm and cozy.

Maya's Lil' Devil Pants

When I saw this pattern I knew I HAD to make it. Again, these are too big for her right now, and will fit her when she's closer to 2 years old. The tail is attached to a button and can be removed from the pants, and the pant size can be adjusted by tightening the drawstring. I love the fine details in the pattern - the edging along the waist and the bottom of the legs is a nice touch.
